Summer School

Within the teaching activities planned, Module DiCit will hold a Summer School on “The European Union and the challenges of digital citizenship”.

The Summer School will aim to offer participants a comprehensive analysis of the main issues related to the ongoing digital revolution, starting with the legal instruments at international and European level and extending the analysis to the main socio-economic implications of the digital revolution, seen in light of the goals and actions of the European Union in this field.

The activity will target not only students (Italian and foreign, undergraduate and PhD students, etc.) but also stakeholders variously interested in the issues examined. The project will adopt a methodological approach that combine traditional and non-formal (innovative) teaching activities (e. g. co-operative learning and working groups) bringing into academic life situations "close to reality", in which participants play a specific role. Teaching methodology will adopt a learner-centred educational approach, based on both traditional formal teaching methods and informal techniques that recognizes the value of personal action and personal exchange. Furthermore, the methodology employed will take into account the social context and the learning environment of the attendants.

This approach is based on past Jean Monnet experiences, such as a Module, a Chair ad personam on “The protection of human rights in European Union” and a Centre of Excellence on “Migrants’ Rights in the Mediterranean” and the Jean Monnet Network on “MIGRATION AND ASYLUM POLICIES SYSTEMS (MAPS)”, all of the held by “l’Orientale”.

The teaching activities will result into the creation of open digital resources (YouTube videos and the Charter made available in the form of a digital document). The teaching methodology will include as well innovative tools, such as the setting up of a DiCit Hackathon.

The teaching staff will comprise full professors and young researchers and, moreover, in order to ensure a practical approach to the subject, experts in topics related to the “digital field”, such as teachers and educational institutions’ representatives, public authorities and private entities charged with the task of protecting minors and adolescents and providing them with social and mental support, members of the judiciary system, consumers’ representatives, etc. In particular, especially regarding hate speech and cyberbullying, will be involved representatives of: UNAR (National Office for Racial Anti-Discrimination), Ministry of foreign Affairs, OSCAD (Observatory for the protection against discriminatory acts), Information Society Department at the Council of Europe, relevant European Commission Services, IT Companies (as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Microsoft, Instagram, Google+, and others).
